Explaining the success of emerging technologies by innovation system functioning: the case of biomass digestion in Germany

 

(Freeman 1987, 1): ‘…Innovation Systems are networks of institutions, public or private, whose activities and interactions initiate, import, modify, and diffuse new technologies.’

The TIS is defined by Carlsson and Stanckiewicz (1991, 94) as: ‘a network or networks of agents interacting in a specific technology area under a particular institutional infrastructure to generate, diffuse, and utilise technology’.

  • Function 1: Entrepreneurial activities-sounds a little free market bias to me, could be creative activites
  • Function 2: Knowledge development (learning)-liking this concept of agentive apprenticeships
  • Function 3: Knowledge diffusion through networks-liking Affinity Spaces
  • Function 4: Guidance of the search-If you read the description this is mroe shared values
  • Function 5: Market formation
  • Function 6: Resource mobilisation
  • Function 7: Advocacy coalition (creation of legitimacy/counteract resistance of change)

Thinking cognitive apprenticeships and what we see in places using like and you see more agentive apprenticeships. These involve both humans and networks but get driven by the learner goals in a community of shared values.

@benwerd thx for inspiring deep dive. @downes covered it in but never really read deep into spec. Seems both simple enough to implement and expansive enough for the most niche. Vocab spawning everywhere with no one really using them but falling back on basics.

You don't need blockchain in a community you need people #mb #el30

 In @downes el30 class we discussed community and much of the week revolved around "how do decentralized networks arrive at trust" we talked a ton of blockchain.

blockchain...schmockchain...trust isn't an engineering problem it is a human problem. Blocks don't build communities people do.

Stephen laid out three paths to trust through blockchain

  • Proof of Work - any entity can add a block to the chain by performing a complex mathematical calculation and including the result of this calculation in the block. Reliability is ensured by the cost of introducing falsehoods into the chain.

 

  • Proof of Authority - only entities who are authorized may add blocks to the chain (where the identity of these entities is secured, say, by digital signatures). Reliability is ensured by the reliability of the authority, and the impossibility of any non-authorities to add blocks to the chain.

 

  • Proof of Stake - entities can mine or validate block transactions according to how many coins they hold. Reliability is ensured by the existing stake entities hold in the blockchain.

I believe this to too expensive and fruitless endeavors. Communities online take shaping and grooming.Time and we will not be able to engineer our way out of the problems the web currently has.

After @downes I think we should all agree to stop versioning learning. It didn't work for the web, doesn't work for learning to even greater degree. Learning hasn't shifted. Evolution doesn't work that fast. Teaching, society, power structures...yeah that's all up in the air...but how we learn is still pretty much how we have rolled since time eternal.
