Teaching and improv are more a like than we admit. Classroom or stage, student or audience, our job to help them grow. I just film how I teach.

I always use a script. Though this time it was a bunch of stick notes on my computer.

Nobody want to sit through a synchronous zoom class with a 45 minuted narrated power point.

Nobody wants to watch a 45 minute narrated powerpoint.

Still I am more comfortable in front of the camera than most and get to wrap myself in a safety blanket of privilege.

Some other ideas:
-A Pen cast...literally focus your camera on a pad of paper and just draw your lecture like a chalk and blackboard
-Interview the experts--some of my fav content...conversations with people actually in the field
-Self animated slideshows...to change up from PPT I love videoscribe but expensive
-Make the students make the lectures, approve the outlines and the recordings first to ensure quality (and assess students)

Five Reasons I chose to Carve a Spoon as My Subjective's Metaphor #OpenPedagogy #digped

In my previous post I shared pictures of a hand carved spoon I am shaping from wood. I used this tool as a metaphor to explore my goals for . Got me thinking about what would the shape of the sotry be if I stretched the metaphor just a little too far.

Knowledge isn't Spoon Fed

In this class you design your syllabus, well the important parts. I still curate materials and facilitate discussions.

Open pedagogy draws heavily on principles woven into feminism and critical theory. in the sense of striving for the better (hooks, 1994); of seeing growth as a community process rather than a taxonomy of skills aquisition (Weber, 2006).

Many of us gather on a quilt Dave Cormierย  (2015) calls "Community is the Curriculum" which we hold together through intentionaly equitable hospitality. In this class I want us to cook together. Bring in our own flavors to a shared table.

Learning is Messy

We often cast learning in such clinical terms. Our students need an "intervention." Growth requires "diagnostic" assessment. A nice easdy picture cleaned with the medical precision of a septic wipe.

Open pedagogy also draws on ideas of rhizomatic learning. We waste so much time and treasur measuring and sorting children. I would rather double down on reinforcing classroom practices that we know have positive impacts.

I believe the space of learning and not the learner is the variable of interest that should draw your focus. What can you do better to let your students make a mess as you create a community of readers and writers?

Learning Takes Deliberate Planning, Action, and Reflection

Open Pedagogy gets driven by those who learn out loud. By that I mean we share our reflections, openly blog throughout the design practice, often create content for the Commons, and encourage our students to do the same.

When you make learning visibile (Hattie) you help students grow. When you encourage students to that from a place they can call their own you help them be.

In this class you control your level of openess and privacy. You can share only in our private Microsoft Teams channels or publicly by publishing on your own website.

Play With Knives

Imagine walking into your principles office and suggesting giving out knives to all the eigh year olds. Think it will fly?

Why not?

I have taught so many children ages 6-10 to play with knives in cub scouts. I am happy my kids can, with supervision, sit outside and play with knives

We shelter our children from too many complex tools and topics. I believe we must engage students in critical issues for change from a Vygotoskian dialectical perspecticve.

In this class we will explore the relationship of open pedagogy, privacy, and strategy exchange amongst our peers as you folks work toward your subjectives.

Know the Right Amount of Pressure

If you look closely at where my spoon is and where I planned it to be you will see they are not alike. I say I am trying to break from my love of symmetrical design, others will call it a lack of skill. Either way, many times when I press too hard the wood cracked.

Learning works this way. We need to rethink assessment and the pressures we put on children. As Sean Michael Morris and Jessie Stommel ask us, "How do we measure the love of learning?"

In this class I hope to leave that question unanswered as we all try a little bit better tomorrow all figuring it out.

Carving out Room For Subjectives in New Educational Spaces #edu522

In every conversation you hear calls to get back to school, to "Get back to Normal."

I don't like the old normal. Normal did not work for the majority of our children. Especially black, brown, and indigenous kids.

I want to serve up something new.

So to illustrate my subjectives for this class I decided to learn a bit more whittling and carve up a spoon.

I believe we must mix up perspectives and I am hoping to accomplish two projects in this class:

  • A digital handbook on how to blog using WordPress and the SemPress theme
  • An autoethnography on me learning to build a poetry page as I taught a LEP Tech class and participated in the IndieWeb movement

Eat Your Own Cooking

As I try to stir up good trouble in my career I use a lens of digitally engaged scholarship. Borrowing from community engage scholarship I can not separate my creative activity, teaching, and service. These three, I believe, need to work together in service to the greater good in partnership with communities and learners

For the last few years much of these efforts for me have revolved around the IndieWeb movement. I help an amazing group of web activists. We started the Elm City Webmakers, run a free tech camp for teens in New Haven, and organize events all over the world. Developers release amazing technology that re-envisions the web as our social network.

Recently the IndieWeb community, in continuous reflections on diversity and inclusiuon metaphors, adopted a metaphor of "eat your own cooklng" to replace the metaphor of "self dog-fooding." This just means using the stuff you build and building stuff to use rather than just talking about building.

So I thought the spoon made a good physical metaphor for my subjectives. I always thought of my pocket knife as my original 3-d printer. It just works backwards much like an autoethnography. I also want to stir up good trouble to start recentering the web in marginalized communities.

Cook With Others

Recently at the IndieWeb West conference I facilitated a session on Cooking For Others. I am glad we moved on from the idea of self-dogfooding, but I wanted to try and get at something else. It's hard for me to describe, still working out the idea but for many they come to movements and communities, out of a sense of duty to others.

The idea of only using what you build made Silicon Valley billionaires. The model works. I just wonder if it works for everyone. Maybe it is a bit of mindset and not just metaphors we need to shift.

At the same time I will never ask my students to do something I will not do. So I am asking you to learn something new and be open about the process. Therefore I needed to the same.

I guess me learnining how to whittle is my attempt. I carved a missing chess pawn when we went camping with neighbors and I recently found myself desperate for an evening distraction. I work around the clock M-R and my partner works at a restautant W-S.

Basically stare at a screen all day. Have binged everything bingebale on all the networks (well still need to finsih the 100) and haven't done any kidless adulting, or any social gatherings since March.

Why not just stare at a fire and whittle wood? Sharing my carving will be the dish I bring to our table. I can not wait to see what tales you serve up.
