Delman and imore importantly we build spelling by building our word analysis skills. It really sits on the wall between phonics and knowledge. I always say, want me to assess a student's reading give me a paragraph they wrote.
The spelling clues and sentence syntax tell me just as much quicker and more reliable than any running record imo.
We also know spelling gets best learned through patterns so we teach students to recognize when patterns do not match and then use the affordances of the text around them to help decode the word.
When teaching spelling the readings taught us we need to make it production based and not just rote memorization. Your connection to fluency was spot on.
Me personally, I like reading a paragraph a kid wrote to recognize where they need help with phonics and centers, so many fun games, that was one area I used more homogeneous grouping, my center groups based on Words Their Way spelling inventory
Or with the wild growth of fundations you have children spelling out common phonics patterns in the air that they have long sensed mastered, yet keeping every kid on same page wins out against differentiation of phonics instruction.
I teach running records, listening to kids read great way to identify phonics then spelling help (though I am faster at recongizing phonics level by reading their writing)...the MSV stuff...might as well throw darts at wall. I skip it. #ncte19
Yeah i look to spelling in their writing only if I am trying to figure out where I should be putting my phonics teaching. Separate out writing phonics, spelling, and morphology. different goals for different times. #ILAchat
@mattl .....And I make a spelling mistake in the first text overlay. That is the worst part about video... would so rather overlay a div on top a video element to make encoding and accessibility easier. We need an html 5 media remix machine.
